Rev. John J. X. Glynn, O.S.A. (1907 - 1966)

Rev. John J. X. Glynn, O.S.A. entered eternal life on March 3, 1966.

John Joseph Xavier Glynn was born on December 17, 1907 in Lawrence, Massachusetts to Martin and Katherine (McDonaugh) Glynn. He was baptized on December 22, 1907 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Lawrence. He received the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 11, 1922 at the same church.

John received his elementary education at the local parochial school. He attended St. John Prep, Danvers, Massachusetts, before transferring to Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, which awarded him a high school diploma.

He was received into the Augustinian Novitiate on August 15, 1926. He professed simple (temporary) vows in the Order of St. Augustine on August 16, 1927 and solemn (permanent) vows on August 16, 1930.

John earned a B. A. in Philosophy from Villanova College, Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1930. He then pursued theological studies at Augustinian College, Washington, D.C. John was ordained a priest on June 13, 1933. He earned an M.A. in Religion from Catholic University of America, Washington, in 1934.

Father Glynn taught at Villanova Prep School, Ojai, California, from 1934 to 1936. He was then assigned to St. Rita High School, Chicago, Illinois, where he taught and served as Vice-Principal from 1936 to 1944. He was appointed Principal of St. Thomas High School, Rockford, Illinois, in 1944, and he held that position until 1959. Father Glynn was Principal, Rector and Regent of Studies at St. Augustine Seminary, Holland, Michigan, from 1959 to 1963.

In 1963, after 30 years of educational ministry in Augustinian schools, he was transferred to St. Clare of Montefalco Parish, Chicago, where he was Associate Pastor.

Father Glynn collapsed in the morning of March 3, 1966 while returning from a parish Communion call. He died a short time later at Holy Cross Hospital, Chicago.

He is buried in the Augustinian plot at St. Mary Cemetery, Lawrence.
