Rev. John J. Lambert, O.S.A. (1943-1994)

Rev. John J. Lambert, O.S.A. entered eternal life on August 7, 1994.

John Joseph Lambert was born on February 19, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois to Francis C. and Virginia (Longton) Lambert. He had one sister, Mary Joan. He was baptized on March 14, 1943 at St. Carthage Catholic Church, Chicago.

John was received into the Augustinian Novitiate on September 3, 1961. He professed simple (temporary) vows in the Order of St. Augustine on September 4, 1962 and solemn (permanent) vows on September 4, 1965.

He earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Tolentine College, Olympia Fields, Illinois, in 1966. After completing his theological studies at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, he was ordained a priest on February 6, 1971 at Augustinian Academy, St. Louis.

Father Lambert taught from 1968 to 1972 at Augustinian Academy, St. Louis. In 1972, he became Associate Pastor of St. Augustine Church, Detroit, Michigan.  He then taught from 1973 to 1975 at St. Rita High School, Chicago.

Father Lambert filled several posts for the Augustinian Midwest Province from 1975 to 1985. These included Province Vocations Director, Director of the Augustinian Associates Program, and Foreign Missions Procurator. At the same time, he served as a counselor at Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights, Illinois.

In 1985, Father Lambert was appointed Pastor of St. Clare of Montefalco Parish, Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.  He was then assigned in 1989 to Providence Catholic High School, New Lenox, Illinois, as a counselor. In 1990, he joined the faculty of Bishop McNamara High School, Kankakee, Illinois.

He became Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Gainesville, Texas, in 1993.

Father Lambert died on August 7, 1994 after suffering a heart attack.

Father Lambert is remembered for his easy-going and cheerful personality, the hallmarks of his Augustinian religious life.

He is buried in the Augustinian plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois.
