Deacon Edward F. Farrell, O.S.A. (1913-1993)
Deacon Edward F. Farrell, O.S.A. entered eternal life on February 16, 1993.
Edward Francis Farrell was born on January 12, 1913 in Chicago, Illinois to Martin and Mary (Toomey) Farrell. He was baptized in February of 1913 at St. Basil Catholic Church, Chicago.
He graduated from St. Rita High School, Chicago, in 1931. He then studied for two years (1931-33) at Chicago Teachers College (now Chicago State University), Chicago.
Edward was received into the Augustinian Novitiate on September 9, 1934. He professed simple (temporary) vows in the Order of St. Augustine on September 10, 1935 and solemn (permanent) vows on September 10, 1938. Edward was ordained a Deacon on August 23, 1939.
Upon completion of his Novitiate year, he continued his education at Villanova College, Villanova, Pennsylvania, earning a B.A. in Mathematics in 1937. He studied Theology at Augustinian College, Washington, D.C., from 1937 to 1940.
Deacon Farrell was first assigned as a teacher to Malvern Preparatory High School, Malvern, Pennsylvania (1940-44). He was next assigned to Cascia Hall Preparatory School, Tulsa, Oklahoma (1944-48). He then joined the staff at St. Monica Novitiate and Brothers' Formation Program, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
In 1985, Deacon Farrell retired and helped with general maintenance at St. Monica. When St. Monica Monastery was closed, he returned to Cascia Hall Monastery, Tulsa.
Deacon Farrell died peacefully in the afternoon of February 16, 1993 at Franciscan Villa, Tulsa, after a relatively brief hospitalization for a possible stroke.
Ed Farrell was a man of deep humility and dedication as an Augustinian. He was happy to serve the community even in the most menial tasks.
He is buried in the Augustinian plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, Illinois.
